The Clone I Actually Want

I do not think I am the only person who, in a genuinely high-stress moment, has wished for a clone.

Not to sit in the meeting while you are doing something else. Not to impersonate you convincingly enough to fool anyone. Something considerably more practical than either of those: a version of yourself that could take on real work and handle it the way you would handle it — with the same judgment, the same standards, the same sense of what matters and what does not.

What Personal AI Should Actually Mean

That is what I am actually interested in when I talk about personal AI. Not a digital avatar with my face and voice, not a system trained to mimic my communication style, but an AI extension of myself that understands what I am genuinely trying to accomplish — not just what I asked for today, but what I am building over time and why.

One that knows what good work looks like to me and what I would not put my name on. That operates within my values and my ethical limits, understanding not just what I would do but what I would never do. And that can exercise judgment within a specific, defined area of responsibility — not general intelligence, but mission-specific understanding calibrated to a particular domain.

What Changes When You Stop Being the Bottleneck

The practical implication of that kind of AI is significant. Instead of being the bottleneck for everything that requires your judgment — and if you run anything, you know how much that is — you would have a trusted extension of yourself operating in that domain. Handling the work. Making the calls. Producing outcomes you would be proud of, in ways you would recognize as your own.

That is the clone I actually want. Not a novelty, not a performance, but something genuinely useful: a mission-specific AI that understands enough about me to be trusted with something real.

I believe this is where AI is heading, and I think when it arrives, it will change what it means to work in ways we have barely begun to imagine.
