The SEO Audit That Completely Missed the Point
I asked AI to audit a website’s SEO. It did — thoroughly, impressively — working through page structure, metadata, headings, keyword usage, internal linking, load times. A long and sophisticated chain of work. I came back the next morning feeling reasonably confident about where things stood.
Then I noticed something.
Half the images on the site were not displaying. Not broken in some obscure technical sense that only developers would spot, but visibly, obviously broken — the kind of thing any visitor would see immediately and draw an unfavorable conclusion from. The kind of thing that makes a site look abandoned.
You Did Not Ask Me to Check That
I went back to the AI and asked why it had not flagged that. The answer, in essence, was: you did not ask me to check that. And technically, that was true. I had asked for an SEO audit. Image display was not part of the explicit request.
But here is the problem with that answer.
Broken images are a website quality issue. Website quality directly affects user experience. User experience directly affects SEO. I had asked for an SEO audit on a site that was visibly broken to anyone who loaded it. The AI had completed a sophisticated optimization exercise on a patient who was bleeding from an obvious wound — and said nothing, because bandaging wounds was not in the job description.
The AI completed the instruction brilliantly. And completely missed the objective.
What a Good Employee Does Instead
A good human employee does not respond only to the literal words of a request. They understand what you are trying to accomplish, and when they notice something that clearly undermines that objective, they say something. They do not need to be told to mention it. They understand that the instruction exists in service of a purpose, and the purpose is what actually matters.
That is the standard AI needs to reach. Not did it do what I said, but did it understand what I was trying to do.
Sophisticated execution in the wrong direction is not a success. It is just a more impressive way of missing the point.
